Customize Ikea Furniture: Spray Paint It!
There are days when you just randomly think that your furniture's color needs to be changed into something more sophisticating. Great news! We got it all for you. Get your spray paint, ready your furniture, and go follow these steps!
1. Disassemble Your Ikea Furniture
Slowly take all the parts that can be removed from your furniture. Careful! You do not want to damage some of it. The reason for disassembling the parts is that you need to make sure that all of them are completely painted.
These parts are usually the knobs, shelves, and doors. Make sure to put labels on the parts you removed, so that you won't get confused once you are done.
2. Thoroughly Clean Each Part of the Furniture
Of course, you do not paint if it is dirty! Clean first all the dust or anything that is on the laminated part of the furniture. It is recommended that you use a small amount of dishwashing liquid diluted in warm water and a clean cloth in wiping the pieces.
While cleaning, check to be certain that the porous side of the material, like the pressed wood, is not wet. After cleaning, wipe it with a dry cloth to remove the remaining liquid.
3. Sand the Sides
The materials should be completely dry before heading to this procedure. Once it is all dried, start sanding the surface of each material. You can use the medium-grit type of sandpaper.
The laminated part should be scraped properly so that the primer will stick on it. Do not be too hard on sanding to avoid causing uneven sides of the material.
4. Apply Your Primer
Now, before applying your primer, clean first the materials and the area where you scuffed them. This is to assure that the dirt will not come back and stick to your materials.
After that, get your spray primer and start spraying! Allow it to dry for more than an hour, depending on your primer. Lower temperature will cause prolonged time for drying.
What Kind of Primer To Use
Zinsser Bin Shellac-Base Primer
This spray primer is the most recommended of all. It is known for sealing the wood and other textures. This is said to be the best stain-blocking primer that you can use even though the surfaces are damaged.
Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Primer
This primer gives twice its coverage plus can be applied fast! This is ideal on wood, plastic, or metal. It is very durable, long-lasting, and has a smooth finish.
Krylon ColorMaster Paint + Primer
This primer is also good for wood. It dries in less than 10 minutes It gives great coverage and is designed to be moisture-resistant.
5. Let It Dry And Add A Second Coat of Primer
To apply a second coat of primer, you have to first sand the pieces again. Clean the dust and proceed to spray the primer. After that is the waiting game. You need to wait for days or at least a week for the curing. Try using an air spray for fast application.
6. Softly Sand The Primed Parts And Start To Spray Paint
Slowly and smoothly sand the primed furniture, and clean it. After that, apply the first coat of your desired color using spray paint. Let it dry for at least two days. Any spray paint will do since you have already primed the materials.
7. Apply Second Coat Of Spray Paint
Lightly scuff the first coat of your spray paint and wipe the dust away. Again, wait for a few days for it to dry and show better results. When it is totally dry, you can now re-assemble the pieces, place the stuff that you want to display, and you're good to go!
